Build Confidence • Strengthen Your Paintings • Develop a Personal Painterly Voice in this forgiving medium

Move beyond the mechanics of gouache and learn to use the medium with greater clarity, confidence, and expressive freedom.

This online workshop combines live demonstrations, discussion, studio practice, and individual feedback. You will learn to make stronger decisions about value, shape, color, temperature, edges, composition, and brushwork—and bring them together in paintings that feel intentional and alive.

Rather than simply reproducing what you see, you will learn to interpret a subject through simplification, design, and selective emphasis. You will discover how to organize visual information, create a focal point, build convincing space, and use gouache’s flexibility to develop a more personal way of painting.

Because the workshop takes place online, you can learn from your own studio while observing the painting process in close detail. Demonstrations will include the adjustments, corrections, and unexpected decisions that shape every painting. You will have opportunities to ask questions, share work in progress, and receive individual guidance.

WHAT YOU WILL DEVELOP

A Confident Understanding of Gouache

Gouache can range from transparent, atmospheric washes to bold, opaque passages. You will learn to use this range intentionally while understanding the medium’s opacity, re-solubility, and capacity for revision.

You will explore:

●Controlling the water-to-paint ratio

●Moving between transparent and opaque applications

●Anticipating shifts as paint dries, including lights drying darker and darks drying light

●Understanding how surface color affects paint

●Testing mixtures before applying them

●Reworking passages without losing the underlying structure

●Knowing when to refine and when to leave a passage alone

You will gain a clearer sense of what gouache can do, how to correct it, and how to make the process more predictable and efficient. Learn the mechanics of gouache and discover how to use this versatile medium with confidence, intention, and expressive freedom.

Through live demonstration, discussion, studio practice, and individual guidance, you’ll explore how value, shape, color, temperature, edges, composition, and brushwork come together to create stronger, more dynamic paintings. See the painting process up close—from the first decisions to adjustments, corrections, and unexpected discoveries.

Join me online and immerse yourself in the possibilities of gouache. Bring your paintings, your questions, and your curiosity—and discover what this remarkably forgiving medium can bring to your work. The workshop will be recorded and available to students afterwards.
